I had coffee in Norway the other day.
I could have walked out the coffee shop door and been in Mexico inside of an hour.
My secret?
People kept referencing the Yukon in conversations. “Why are Vermonters, New Hampshireites, Connecticuters, etc. always discussing a nearly-uninhabited, Canadian wild-land four thousand miles away?” I wondered. A month later, a lightbulb moment: the Yukon Territory isn’t on the collective radar after all. What is?
“What the hell is that?!” I asked the horse trainer at the farm where I’d picked up work while house sitting in New Hampshire.
Sitting shotgun in his big black pick-up truck, I stared out the window at the neighbor’s untidy scene. Plastic tubing wound in and out of giant steel containers, all of it strung between a stand of naked trees.
Not that I know the first thing about meth labs, but this situation looked sketchy enough to qualify.
Tom has been eating babies all his life. He’s tall and robust: so at first glance, you might not be surprised. It’s his mother who started it.
My luck at U.S. Customs & Immigration is horrible. The worst.
My time at the farm in Portugal was smooth sailing.
Until I tried to leave.
My budget travel life requires moving slowly and spending lots of time with locals – my dream come true!
That means most of the people I meet do not travel the world and know nothing about budget travel. Which also means 90% of my first-meeting conversations involve a discussion of my finances. They go much like this:
After years of answering questions and publishing more and more travel how-to’s, I realized in 2015 this blog isn’t really about me anymore.
Sure, I post about the mishaps (like that Amsterdam heart-attack) and the joys of life as a nomad. And I’ll finish this entry with a recap of my 2015 travels.
